The Chilli Company: Red hot business advice for Suffolk’s Chilli Company

A rapidly-growing chilli farm in Stowmarket is receiving red hot business advice to help realise its true potential, create new jobs and crack huge markets thanks to the new programme, Coaching for High GrowThe Chilli Company 1th.

‘Coaching for High Growth’ offers local companies exclusive access to a host of experienced business coaches with industry expertise, for one-to-one support and advice on preparing a business for rapid growth. One such local business to enrol on the programme is The Chilli Company.

Named ‘business start-up of the year’ by the East Anglian Daily Times in 2007, Denise and Adrian Nuttall’s The Chilli Company offers a unique ‘from seed to plate’ experience in chilli growing and distribution at their farm in Mendlesham.

With a farm shop and café, a growing product line of sauces, chutneys and jellies sold in hundreds of outlets across the region, aspirations to seal major supermarket supply contracts in the New Year, whilst establishing their farm as a regional tourist attraction and educational learning centre for schools and colleges, The Chilli Company’s potential for growth is vast.

Denise Nuttall, co-director of The Chilli Company, said:  “EEDA’s coaching programme has come around at just the right time for us. We currently stand at a crossroads with a number of routes available to develop our business model – we are determined to seize every opportunity. To realise our true growth potential, we know the infrastructure of our business has to be solid. From increasing staff levels to raising finance, developing supply chains to marketing ourselves, the high-growth coaching programme gives us an invaluable opportunity to tap-in to industry expertise and sense-check our plans.”

Denise expects to offer a number of apprenticeships to horticultural and landscaping students at Otley College early in the New Year as The Chilli Company looks to develop its farming site and processes. Denise is also looking to recruit a non-executive director, a sales and marketing intern and a retired teacher to develop the educational side of the business.

Denise and husband Adrian have been working alongside experienced business coach Judith Krichefski. Judith has increased the profitability and productivity of over 1,000 high-growth companies in the past decade, including household names such as Maison Blanc, Joubere and The Fresh Olive Company.

Judith Krichefski said:  “One of the main issues for a company at this stage is becoming overwhelmed as the directors try to do everything in the business themselves and take on a strategic role at the same time. As soon as they start limiting themselves to the tasks that only they can do and hand over the rest, in a cost effective way, the business will soon move forward to the next stage.”
