St John’s Innovation Centre-based public relations and marketing agency, Conscious Communications, scooped two awards at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) PRide Awards 2019 on Thursday 19 September; achieving Gold in the Low Budget Campaign of the Year category and Silver for the Regional Campaign of the Year.

Conscious Communications was awarded Gold for its portion sizes media relations campaign for the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), which resulted in 264 pieces of editorial coverage, over 150,000 unique users and more than 45,000 downloads of the portion size resource from the BNF’s website.
Judge’s feedback on the campaign included: “This was a fantastic campaign with an innovative and unique creative output, based on data and insight from focus groups. Real consideration was given as to what would resonate with the media. ‘Portion Sizes’ gained fantastic high profile coverage which resulted in behavioural change.”

Joanna Colley, PR and Marketing Manager at Conscious Communications, commented: “Taking insight gathered from focus groups, we worked with the BNF to develop the idea of using hand, finger and spoon measures to easily illustrate appropriate portion sizes. Once the resource was finalised, the next step was to ensure everyone heard about it – with a strategic media relations campaign, and supporting social media, the news went viral. I wholeheartedly believe we had a big impact on the public’s perceptions of portion sizes, and hopefully their health too.”

The second award that the agency took home was for its work with the FIRST® LEGO® League, an international competition designed to encourage students to engage in STEM by solving real world challenges. The agency, appointed by operational partners The Institute of Engineering and Qualcomm Technologies, engaged with schools from underprivileged communities as part of the FIRST® LEGO® League Cambridge tournament in order to provide a high profile, exciting and enriching STEM experience.

The CIPR PRide Awards 2019 celebrates the work of PR professionals across the UK, with Thursday’s event at the Guildhall, Cambridge, recognising PR agencies and experts in the Anglia, Thames and Chiltern regions. The double-win is the latest in a series of awards for the agency, which has also been recognised in 2019 at The Drum PR Awards, the PRCA DARE Awards and the CIPR Excellence Awards.

Alison Taylor, Managing Director at Conscious Communications, said: “It’s fantastic to be recognised for our impact and creativity at the CIPR Awards, and to take home not just one, but two awards, is testament to the hard work and commitment of our team. It does, of course, help to be working with such wonderful and inspiring clients as British Nutrition Foundation and FIRST® LEGO® League too!”
