Bank of England

The Bank of England is the UK’s central bank. They promote the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

Phil Eckersley – South East & Anglia Agent

Phil started with the Bank of England in 1987 having spent three years teaching economics and mathematics in SE London.

After four years working as a statistician on money supply data, Phil moved to the management’s accounts office in the Bank, providing detailed cost briefing to Governors and Directors.

In 1994 Phil joined the Bank of England’s agency network, between 1994 and 2002 acting as Deputy Agent in the South East & East Anglia moving on in 2002 to become Agent for Northern Ireland; then in October 2008 he was appointed to be the Agent in the South East & East Anglia.

St John’s Innovation Centre

St John’s Innovation Centre was founded in 1987 by St John’s College, Cambridge, the first pioneering business incubator of its kind in Europe. The Centre now provides almost 5,000m2 of managed workspace and flexible leases, currently occupied by around 87 companies and is also the base for around 350 virtual tenants, most of whom are also startups.

It aims to provide a dynamic and supportive environment to accelerate the growth of early stage knowledge-based companies with flexible accommodation, strategic business advice, training and introductions. It is located at the heart of the Greater Cambridge technology cluster, in which it plays a pivotal role, and is a Business & Innovation Centre (BIC) accredited by the European Business Network.

David Gill – Managing Director

David is Managing Director of the St John’s Innovation Centre Ltd in Cambridge. He previously set up and ran the Innovation & Technology Unit at HSBC Bank in London, before serving as an executive director of a venture fund focused on early-stage, technology-based investments. Educated at Cambridge, David Gill qualified as a barrister before working in corporate finance for US and UK banks. A Sloan Fellow at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California (2005), David is currently an Academic Collaborator at the University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing.

He is also the co-author of a number of publications on innovation, incubation and finance; and from 2008 to 2013 he was a member of the UK Department for Business Access to Finance Expert Group. David leads the strategic oversight of the National Pitchfest offer being delivered by Innovate UK EDGE.
